An extremely rare early tetartemorion from Magnesia ad Maeandrum (?)
Lot 930
IONIA. Magnesia ad Maeandrum (?). Circa 500-464 BC. Tetartemorion (Silver, 6 mm, 0.22 g, 10 h). Head of a rooster to right. Rev. Head of an eagle to right; below, M; all within incuse square. BMC -. Naumann E-Auction 41 (2016), 274 corr. (same dies, but M not noted). Rosen -. SNG Kayhan -. Extremely rare. A nicely toned piece of lovely early Classical style. Very fine.

From the collection of Dr. P. Vogl, ex Aufhäuser 12, 1 October 1996, 71 (with original ticket).

The tentative attribution of this lovely issue to Magnesia is based on the single letter M on the reverse, as well as on the similarity of the eagle head on the reverse to that on the coinage of Themistokles and Archepolis (see Nomos 10 (2015), 47).
